USFL Draft

The USFL draft has been set for mid–February, a specific day and time is not known at this time, this is according to sources familiar with the formation of the USFL. The draft will be structured differently than the NFL draft whereby teams will draft by position, quarterback being first, this is also according to those same sources. This is different from the NFL draft model of having seven rounds and teams select based whatever the order is for that particular round. There are 50 players in the current USFL draft pool, sources state. These players come from all over professional football, CFL, XFL, NFL and AAF.

Coordinating the player personnel efforts will be longtime front office executive John Peterson. Peterson most recently served as the Director of Football Operations for the XFL`s New York Guardians and has been a member of the front office for many different organizations across the AAF, XFL, CFL and NFL. The league hopes Peterson can draw on his 28 years of experience in player personnel at the professional level to elevate and provide elite talent for the coaching staff to mold and develop. His official title is believed to be “Director of Pro Personnel”.

This is great news for football fans, as the bowl games come to a close, and the football fan watches several great players careers come to an end, the USFL and an opportunity to enter its draft pool gives these great players, as well as players who have played in the NFL, CFL, XFL and AAF a much-needed opportunity to further their careers in professional football. There will be a tryout in Los Angeles for players whom the current USFL player personnel and team-based personnel staffs are not familiar with. This tryout will happen sometime before the draft in February.
